What Kind of Energy Companies are There in Texas?
People often get tired just thinking about energy companies. It’s even more confusing for Texans because of deregulated energy.
Deregulation means that most Texas residents have the right to choose which energy provider they want to work with. This freedom is a good thing, but it can also be a nightmare. There are currently over 100 different energy companies all vying for your business.
Choosing which one is right for you is next to impossible unless you contact us at Energenie. We can do what would take you hours or days to accomplish in minutes. Once we have your zip code, we go through all the energy companies in your area and find the best plan for you and your family.
Energy Companies versus Electric Companies
The first distinction that we should make is the difference between energy companies and electric companies. Electric companies strictly supply electricity to homes and businesses in Texas. Energy companies include any organization that produces different forms of energy.
Where it gets confusing is that electricity is actually a form of energy. It’s created by energy-generating companies that convert fossil fuels, solar, wind, or geothermal energy to electricity.

Different Types of Energy Companies
The energy industry in Texas consists of thousands of different companies operating in various capacities. Most of those companies work in one of three distinct areas.
Energy Generating Companies
Energy generating companies are the companies that create electricity. They do this by taking oil, coal, gas, or renewable resources and converting them into electricity. They then sell the electricity they generate to retail electricity providers.
Retail Electricity Providers (REPs)
REPs are the power companies that you purchase electricity from. They are the company that you deal with when there are outages and to whom you pay your monthly power bill. REPs can be challenging to deal with, which is another way Energenie makes your life easier. We act as the middle-man between you and your REP.
Transmission & Distribution Utilities (TDUs)
Finally, TDUs are the energy companies that ensure electricity gets from the REP to your home. They own and manage the power lines, electric poles, wiring, and electric meters that bring electricity to your home. If there’s an outage or a repair that’s necessary, the TDU that your REP deals with will handle it. As of 2022, there are six major TDUs in Texas.
Solar Energy Companies
Out of all the states in the U.S., Texas ranks number one in solar energy potential. There are currently over 200,000 homes and businesses in Texas powered by solar energy. It’s estimated that those numbers will grow exponentially in the coming years. As a result, over 500 energy companies in Texas are dedicated to producing solar energy.
Renewable Resource Energy Companies
Technically, solar energy falls into the category of renewable resources, but it’s important enough to list separately. Other forms of renewable resources include wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric. Outside of fossil fuels, wind energy is the number one source of electricity in Texas. Over 15% of all the electricity produced in Texas comes via wind, and another 5% via other forms of renewable energy.
Most of these renewable energy companies are owned and operated by the government. There are often rewards and free electricity involved when you sign up for electric deals via one of these companies.
Green and Clean Energy Companies
Green and clean energy companies often fall into the same category as renewable energy companies. They all mean the same thing: they produce electricity from renewable, green, and clean resources such as wind, water, solar, or geothermal. Your REP can often sign you up for a green or clean energy plan.
Where it gets tricky is that you’re not actually the one using the renewable resources. Instead, you’re paying your electricity company a “monetary offset” that helps renewable resource energy producers cover their costs. If you care about the environment, signing up for a green deal will help Texas reduce its carbon footprint.
Fossil Fuel Energy Companies
Last but certainly not least, there are energy companies that create electricity via fossil fuels. Oil, coal, and natural gas are the three fossil fuels used to produce electricity. There are hundreds of companies in Texas dedicated to making this happen. Despite the surge of renewable resource energy companies, fossil fuels still provide nearly 70%-80% of the electricity in Texas.
As you can see, hundreds of companies either create, sell, or maintain electricity in Texas. Energenie can help you wade through the confusing world of energy and find the best company to serve your needs.
